Message from Immediate Past President & Outreach Chair Sarah Welch

Spring has a way of reminding us how quickly time moves. After months of early sunsets, freezing temperatures, and 5 a.m. school delays and cancellations, spring arrives almost overnight — and suddenly, one quarter of the calendar year is behind us and the final stretch of the school year is coming at us full speed ahead.

In schools, that feeling is even more pronounced. One moment, we’re welcoming students on the first day in August, and before we know it, we’re celebrating milestones and preparing them for what comes next.

As I conclude my 12th year working in the Keystone Oaks School District, not only am I gearing up to share these stories of growth and transition, but I’ve also come to realize that I am hitting a milestone that feels especially meaningful:

The students who were in kindergarten when I first joined my school district are now preparing to enter their senior year of high school.

This doesn’t seem possible; yet, here we are.

And when you consider everything that has happened over the past 12 years, the challenges, the changes, and the moments that have required resilience, it becomes even more remarkable to think about the students who have grown up through it all.

And not just them, but ourselves as school communications professionals — and, in many ways, our school districts, too. A lot has changed since 2014.

In my district, since the Class of 2027’s first day of kindergarten, we’ve expanded opportunities and reimagined what learning can look like: introducing full-day kindergarten, adding STEAM experiences at the elementary level, building an orchestra program, and providing more opportunities for students to explore careers, receive college credit, and earn industry-recognized certifications while in high school.

The past 12 years have been filled with growth, success, and excellence, and it has been — and continues to be — a privilege to be able to share those stories with our community.

But, as every school communicator knows, this work is much more than celebrating the success of our students, staff, and schools. Over this same time frame, our work has grown more complex and the expectations on us continue to evolve - ensuring accessibility and ADA compliance, navigating uncertainty around policy changes at the federal level, meeting increasing demands for transparency, and communicating about the responsible use of taxpayer dollars in an ever-changing economic landscape.

Overcoming these challenges requires thoughtfulness, adaptability, and trust, as well as a network of experienced communications professionals that you can rely on for advice, support, and sometimes, a draft letter or two to help you get started.

As another school year draws to a close, like many of you, I am planning out my summer to-do list, which will focus on accessibility, family engagement, and implementing new branding guidelines for our district.

I am, once again, deeply grateful for the network of school communications professionals in Pennsylvania and beyond who have supported, challenged, and inspired me this year. I am fortunate to be connected to a professional learning community that is always willing to share resources, knowledge, and ideas that help inform and shape my approach to this important work.

And as I think about the work ahead, I can’t help but think about the students preparing for their senior year. The “summer before senior year” is often filled with reflection, anticipation, and excitement about what lies ahead. It’s a time to look back on how far you’ve come while beginning to imagine what happens next.

In many ways, that’s where we find ourselves, too.

As we close out another school year and look ahead to the next, I hope you find time to reflect on the stories you’ve told, the challenges you’ve navigated, and the growth you’ve experienced alongside your students and school communities.

Because, just like the students we serve, we’re always learning, always adapting, and — together — always moving forward.
